Established in 2006, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is a partnership of 41 countries and 8 international organizations committed to helping developing countries reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and adapt to climate change. The partnership’s mission is to mainstream disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) in country development strategies by supporting a country-led and managed implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). GFDRR’s Partnership Charter, revised in April 2010, sets its original mission, rationale, and governance structure.
GFDRR has three main business lines to achieve its development objectives at the global, regional and country levels.
Six initiatives that complement the three tracks and Climate Change Adapation (CCA) programs are:
Weather and Climate Information and Decision-Support Systems (WCIDS)
To help implement the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 (HFA), GFDRR established a program to strengthen weather and climate information and decision-support systems (WCIDS). Strengthening WCIDS is important for climate adaptation and sustainable development. Through its Disaster Risk Reduction Mainstreaming Program, GFDRR already provides ex-ante assistance to developing countries to strengthen their WCIDS and EWS capacities.
The GFDRR Program for Strengthening WCIDS will mainstream development of modern, sustainable, service-oriented weather and climate information systems into the GFDRR and World Bank portfolio.
